The Famous Nine, by Farrow & Ball

January 28th, 2011

brassica The Famous Nine are new colours for 2011 by Farrow & Ball. First up is Brassica which looks a bit like purple cabbage and comes alive used with Calluna, a pretty heather colour and Pelt. Cabbage White takes its name from the distinctive wings of the Cabbage White butterfly. Fourth up, Charlotte’s Locks is absolutely no connection with the colour of Nicole Kidman’s hair but is a highly dramatic colour used in the 50’s. Dove Tale is a grey or stony colour, much used by “Bright young things!” between the wars. Manor House Gray is a traditional 18th century colour. Mizzle is very reminiscent of a west country evening mist. Oxford Stone goes well with London Stone. The ninth and final new colour Read the rest of this entry »

November 25th, 2010

dg room service

Following the floods in Cumbria and a £4m refurbishment, things at the Swan are very different. Before the floods, the Swan was a curious combination of traditional English lakeside hotel with a contemporary, somewhat stark, bar and restaurant; perhaps the floods were a timely, if expensive, blessing in disguise.

There’s now a reassuring air of calm amid the chic Designers Guild soft furnishings in reception.  All 52 rooms have been refurbished using Designers Guild, Ralph Lauren and Nina Campbell designs and accessories.

Ral FandeckRAL COLOUR FAN DECK

In 1927 the German Reichsausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung” (State Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance) invented a collection of 40 colors under the name of “RAL 840″. Prior to that date manufacturers and customers had to exchange samples to describe a tint, whereas from then on they would rely on numbers.

In the 1930s the numbers were changed uniformly to four digits and the collection was renamed to “RAL 840 R” (R for revised). With tints constantly added to the collection, it was revised again in 1961 and changed to Read the rest of this entry »

Different Styles of Decorating

November 20th, 2010

colour_tipsThere are many ways of decorating and how you use colour is entirely down to personal preference and your desired feel for the room. There are no strict rules but here are some examples from Farrow & Ball of the most popular ways of decorating.

COLOURED WALLS AND WHITE WOODWORK. The most traditional style is to use a colour on the walls and white gloss on woodwork, often the same white as that on the ceiling. This is a very clean, but sometimes hard look. To soften the contrast, select a white which is more sympathetic to the colour on the walls; this will make the contrast more gradual and you become less aware of where things stop and start, so the confines of the room disappear and it will feel bigger.
